RemWave Sleep
Overview
From zero to one. Praesidium is a startup that aims to remove the invasive nature of tracking and monitoring signs of life. RemWave Sleep is an MVP entry point to bring Praesidium's proprietary contactless vital sign tracking technology to market. The technology utilizes hardware and machine learning to automatically detect presence and accurately track heart rate and breathing rate without physical contact. My job was to identify meaningful features and design an app that made it easy for individual's and families to better understand their sleep.

Problem
The hardware required development team intervention to demonstrate its tracking capabilities and there were no sleep related metrics to correlate the data captured.
Progress with Praesidium's partnerships in the adult sleep industry had stalled due to the absence of a user-centered, market-ready product. The success of these partnerships hinged on delivering a shippable product that consumers could easily adopt, as the technology proof of concept alone was insufficient to secure these deals.
Solution
Rapid development of a market-ready sleep app that provides a simple user setup and meaningful sleep insights for individuals and families.
Discovery
To better understand the target audience, I conducted desk research, competitive analysis, and a usability audits of leading competitors. By examining competing products, I was able to identify current market benchmarks and standards that helped shape the implementation of specific features and usability of the product. Through user testing competing products and user reviews we discovered onboarding and initial setup appeared to be a major pain point.
I also worked with our hardware, firmware, and ML teams to gain a better understanding of our constraints and limitations. This helped me scope and define our MVP deliverables and coordinate efforts with our software team.
Design
To achieve the product goals and align with the business strategy, I designed an app based on UX research findings, team feedback, and iterative design and development cycles. This approach allowed us to address user needs more accurately and better meet the demands of the adult sleep market and our partners. The product was primarily designed to meet the growing demand of health-conscious older adults with families. With this in mind the onboarding, setup, and use would need to be simple and clear. The features would need to feel familiar, yet distinct.
The final design provides users with a simple setup and easy access to their sleep data. Making tracking and progressing toward better sleep more achievable.
By simplifying onboarding and setup, we increased completion rates and user satisfaction. Additionally, we enhanced the first touch experience with a "test drive" feature that provides instant feedback upon setup. This feature transformed the challenge of correct sensor positioning into a positive in-app engagement tool, significantly improving data capture success rates.
Challenges
Correct sensor placement was key to getting consistent, quality data. Due to significant data capture failure rates I designed an in-app step-by-step sensor placement guide to improve signal quality. By prompting the user immediately after setting up the device we saw an increase in successful sleep data captures. The simple in-app walkthrough ruduced troubleshooting requests and improved user experience.
Sleep Data High-Fi Designs
Outcome
Through interactive prototypes and demos we secured interest from several leading mattress suppliers. Upon launching the MVP we landed a partnership with Purple Mattress. RemWave Sleep is currently available in Purple Showrooms across the mountain west and guided experiences are available by Purple Mattress associates.
Showroom associates can demonstrate the capabilities of the RemWave Sleep tracker while showcasing the comfort level and relaxation of the customer through real-time feedback. This approach helps customers find the right mattress fit and highlights the value of sleep tracking with RemWave Sleep, leading to stronger psychological assurance and satisfaction.
Additional Findings
Through interviews with our Scientific Advisory Board members and contacts within the medical industry we found that tracking vital signs like heart rate, respiration, and heart rate variability were intensly valuable in determining quality health factors, especially during sleep. Nearly all consumers ranked vital sign data low on the list of data outputs they found valuable. Our consumer feedback and medical professionals both agree that the interpretation of vital sign data into specific insights to proactive and preventative health monitoring is meaningful.
Introduction of RemWave Sleep into the market and its capabilities in multiuser monitoring quickly gained attention from a global market in remote patient monitoring. Insights and response from the market launch have prompted Praesidium to develop their technology into a software-led, hardware-enabled healthcare product for remote monitoring.
