Overview

SkyWest Online is the gathering place for SkyWest Airlines' employees spread across the country. This in-house intranet was the keystone to corporate news, company culture, team tools, and an employee access point for all employment information, needs and training. SkyWest Online is an integral part of work-life from the moment a new hire joins the team.

This project is confidential and as a result I cannot share any of the amazing visuals.

PROBLEM

Outdated infrastructure hindered productivity and limited the mobile experience.

The infrastructure was aging. The design and function was no longer able to keep up with the growing needs of the company. It was becoming a bottleneck to productivity and the mobile experience felt disconnected and extremely limited.

SOLUTION

Designed a system that is scalable and flexible while providing delightful experiences.

We started from the ground up to identify fundamental requirements to help the system meet a mobile-first mindset while maintaining compatibility with aging technology for a phased release. Empower team leaders with more controls and tools to improve consistency in design and efficiency in deployment. Provide employees with easy access to the information they need and want while surprising them with moments of delight.

DISCOVERY

Collaborated with cross-functional stakeholders to identify and align constraints and objectives.

I worked closely with stakeholders, team leaders, and developers guiding the user experience and designing the interface. We had regular group meetings and 1-on-1 huddles to align business objectives with development progress. Every step of the way we found ourselves discovering ancient relics that needed to be unpacked and thoughtfully crafted into the new design system.

The development overhaul included many aspects of the company, ranging from corporate communications, community engagement, forums, message systems, department tasks and news, custom pages, company news, company data points, culture and reward systems, HR benefits, Employee information and access, events, and so much more.

DESIGN

Professional, yet delightful.

I developed a cohesive design system and defined clear brand objectives. The visual brand blended a clean, professional look with personalized, playful elements to promote productivity, usability, and personal value.

The brand culture underscored company values through design features that highlighted operational performance and safety, motivating team members to meet goals and company objectives.

This visual and experiential approach boosted company morale and confidence, enhancing focus on targets and achievements.

OUTCOME

Joyful adoption to the new system.

Through a staged release, we saw widespread excitement and swift adoption of the new system, with minimal friction from changes to established routines.

By equipping department heads with customized tools to manage their pages, they felt empowered to fulfill their roles confidently and efficiently, all while reducing design and development costs.

Employees appreciated the thoughtful recognition experiences, feeling more valued for their contributions. These engaging daily interactions with the product boosted company morale, fostering more positive interactions with colleagues, customers, and recruits, and driving overall achievement.
